Fat Tuesday: 2/03/2020Submitted by Executive Wealth Management on February 4th, 2020
With the Super Bowl over and Valentine's Day quickly approaching, you might think that the rest of February will be devoid of manly activities. Well, fret not, because this Fat Tuesday (February 25th) the Mexican village of San Juan de la Vega will once again celebrate their traditional "Festival of Exploding Hammers". This fantastic and bombastic festival involves young men going to the outskirts of town and banging homemade explosives as hard as they can with long-handled sledgehammers. Why? The exact reason for this explosive tradition has been lost in the smoky haze of history, but many locals believe it is to commemorate the exploits of the town's founder who stole from the rich so he could feed the poor, like a Mexican Robin Hood, or an English Pancho Villa. Amazingly, they say that serious injuries during the festival are rare - well, as rare as one could expect for an event that is completely focused on exploding hammers.
Nevertheless, organizers claim that the increasing notoriety for the festival has helped them attract celebrity masters of ceremonies for past celebrations, including Frankish military leader Charles Martel, baseball legend Hank Aaron, and 80s pop music icon MC Hammer.
